At age 11 he formed his first band called The Kernels of Joy which featured him on guitar and vocals along with two other members who went on to form another band called The Blue Light Trio later that year (this group would later become known as The Young Rascals). In 1959 Buddy joined up with another local group called The Outsiders who were looking for someone who could play organ; after hearing some demos from Buddy’s friend Donnie Smith (who had already left school due to illness), they decided to hire him instead because he was cheaper than hiring an actual organist/keyboardist!

The album features Buddy’s own compositions as well as covers of songs by artists like Radiohead, Arcade Fire, Modest Mouse and Rickie Lee Jones. It’s really something else—the sound quality is superbly clean and clear; there’s nice separation between instruments; it feels like watching an old black-and-white movie where all of the colors are muted except for reds and blues—and yet somehow still manages to feel warm enough that you want to dance around your apartment singing along with each track until your ears fall off from listening so loud (which I did).
