After graduating from UBC, Starchuk worked as an instructor at another university while she pursued her Master’s degree in clinical psychology at Simon Fraser University (SFU).

In 2004 Starchuk became commissioner for professional development with Health Canada’s Mental Health Commission; upon leaving this position in 2008 she joined BCGEU’s Research Committee on Workplace Rights & Benefits which focused primarily on mental health issues within Canada’s labour movement including wage replacement policies when workers experience workplace stressors such as burnout syndrome or post-partum depression among other things.
